The convoy departed Sugamo Prison area at 0210 hours, 23 December 1948, and arrived at the area occupied by the 108th QM Graves Registration Platoon at 0340 hours. g. Upon arrival in the 108th QM Graves Registration Platoon area the truck transporting the remains was driven into the motor vehicle repair building, where the remains were given final check and receipted for. The lids of each of the seven caskets were then securely nailed down to prevent opening by unauthorized persons. i. At 0725 hours, 23 December 1948, the convoy with remains were dispatched from the 108th QM Graves Registration Platoon area to a crematorium. The same type of convoy formation was used as mentioned in paragraph e, (l), (2), (3), and (4). The convoy arrived at the crematorium at 0755. j. The casketed remains of the seven executed war criminals were placed in the ovens direct from the track, the last one being placed in the oven at 0805. One armed guard, enlisted man, was posted at the entrance to the crematorium. Two were posted outside at points affording the best observation of the surrounding area. Three armed guards, enlisted men, were posted in the room enclosing the fire box end of the ovens where constant observation of cremation was maintained. The remaining two armed guards, enlisted men, were posted immediately outside and at the front end of the ovens. k. Cremation of the seven remains was completed and ovens cleared of the remains in their entirety. Special precaution was taken to preclude overlooking even the smallest particle of remains. I personally inurned the remains in separate urns obtained from the stock of 500 which were previously procured by the Quartermaster, Eighth Army, for normal occupation use. 37 ─ 32 ─
