Strict convoy discipline will be maintained at all times from Yokohama to Sugamo Prison and return. 3. The Quartermaster will dispatch appropriate personnel to Sugamo Prison to take custody of remains when notified of death by the Provost Marshal, Eighth Army. 4. The remains of executed war criminals, and of war criminals who die while awaiting execution, will be cremated and the ashes disposed of secretly at sea. 5. Since the letter cited in paragraph 1 above does not cover the category of war criminals who die while serving a sentence of imprisonment, and since it is probable that disposition of the remains in these cases may vary with the individual, the Quartermaster, Eighth Army, will request disposition instructions in each such case from General Headquarters Far East Command. 6. The remains of individuals being tried for war crimes who die prior to adjudication will be delivered to the local Japanese police authority by the Quartermaster. 7. The following procedure will be followed in the disposition of remains: a. Name, rank, and finger prints will be recorded on WD QMC Form 1042 (in duplicate) before removal of remains from Sugamo Prison. b. Transportation: necessary transportation upon call from the Quartermaster, Eighth Army. c. Security: security guards on call from the Quartermaster, Eighth Army, as indicated: (1) Two (2) armed guards (convoy lead vehicle truck 1/4ton). (2) Two (2) armed guards (convoy trail vehicle truck 1/4ton). d. The remains will be transported to the area occupied by the 108th QM Graves Registration Platoon and held under strict security guard while final preparations are made for disposition. e. Where applicable, the remains will be delivered to the local Japanese police authority, and appropriate receipt will be obtained. f. Where applicable, cremation will be effected and the ashes will be scattered at sea from an Eighth Army liaison plane or from a harbor craft not manned by Japanese Nationals. A field grade officer appointed by the Quartermaster will supervise the cremation and personally scatter the ashes, and will so certify to the Commanding Officer, 108th Graves Registration Platoon, will furnish the Commanding Officer, 108th QM Craves Registration Platoon, will furnish convoy 25 ─ 20 ─
