AG 293 (28 June 48)QM-M 13 August 1948 SUBJECT: Final Disposition and Policies Governing Burial and Graves Registration of Executed War Criminals TO: Commanding General, Eighth Army, APO 343 A-1⽂書（英⽂） Commanding General, Philippines Command, APO 707 1. Letter, General Headquarters, United States Army Forces, Pacific, AG 293 (13 Mar 46 )QMP, dated 13 March 1946, subject: "Policy Governing Burial and Graves Registration of Japanese and other Nationals Convicted and Executed as War Criminals,” is rescinded. 2. The remains of executed war criminals in the custody of the United States Army shall be cremated and the ashes disposed of secretly at sea. Technical arrangements for this operation are the responsibility of the Quartermaster Corps. The Commanding General responsible for the plans and carrying out of execution of the war criminal will designate a senior grade field officer and such other personnel as may be necessary to supervise the disposal of the remains and the ashes of such criminal. The operation shall be conducted as soon as practicable after the execution and adequate security measures against any substitution or removal of remains by any unauthorized persons will be assured by the responsible Commanding General. No disclosure shall be made as to the identity of the remains or the location of the disposal. No publicity shall be given to any phase of the operation. 3. a. If death should occur while the individual is awaiting execution, disposal of the remains will be accomplished as indicated in paragraph 2 above. b. If death should occur prior to trial or conviction, the remains will be delivered by the Quartermaster Corps to the local Japanese police authority in Japan. In areas outside Japan, burial will be accomplished as for deceased prisoners of war in an enemy dead cemetery. 4. It is desired that the remains of executed war criminals now in the custody of the Commanding General, Eighth Army, and the Commanding General, Philippines Command, be exhumed as soon as GENERAL HEADQUARTERS FAR EAST COMMAND SECRET APO 500 20 ─ 15 ─
