A new bilingual corpus, the Sentence Corpus of Remedial English (SCoRE), has been developed to provide both a level-appropriate corpus and set of tools that can be easily used by teachers and lower level prociency EFL learners. The purpose of this paper is to report the results of four 2017 case studies designed to use SCoRE in various ways at two institutions (Nihon University, and the National Institute of Technology, Ibaraki College). These case studies looked at the effectiveness of the use of SCoRE both in hands-on DDL environment (where learners use the software to analyze data) and paper-based DDL (where students are given printed concordance lines to analyze). Gains between pre and post test scores indicate this method was useful for improving students’ basic remedial grammar knowledge. We also received clear positive feedback about the DDL lessons. Additionally, several interesting implications were obtained from these preliminary studies.
